Frequently asked questions
- What is a NACE code?
- NACE is the statistical classification of economic activities in the European Union. Every business is assigned a code for its main activity. The current version, NACE Rev. 2.1, has four levels: section (letter), division (2 digits), group (3 digits) and class (4 digits, e.g. 47.71).
- How does NACE relate to NAF, ATECO, ÖNACE and WZ?
- They are national versions of NACE. Up to the class level (four digits) they are identical in every EU member state. Some countries add a fifth, national digit, which is why an Italian ATECO code or a German WZ code can be longer than the NACE code.
- When does NACE Rev. 2.1 apply?
- NACE Rev. 2.1 is used for EU statistics from 1 January 2025. Member states introduce their national versions on their own timetable, France for example on 1 January 2027.
